My Inspirations!
Hey there!
I wanted to talk about some of my many inspirations that I have when pursuing my journey with voice acting / voice over! I hope you enjoy the read!
To begin, I want to revisit my childhood by remembering the 2000 PS1 game “Spider-Man”. In this game, Peter Parker, also known as the Amazing Spider-Man, is at a science expo where a fake Spider-Man steals a device, and the real Spider-Man is tasked to clear his name as well as fight some familiar foes. During the later stages of the game, you encounter the infamous and deadly foe named Carnage, a crazed alien symbiote with murderous intent. In the game, his voice was portrayed by Dee Bradley Baker. His portrayal had the alien symbiote with this manic high-pitched voice, where each word is enunciated and drawn out to really “revel” in the madness of Carnage’s sanity. As a kid, I was hooked. I felt terrified by the chipper, almost hyena-esque, laughter that Dee Bradley Baker was able to make in the booth. Each time I would control Spider-Man to avoid his attacks, I genuinely felt like there was actual intense danger, just by how much it seemed like Carnage relished in the event of fighting Spider-Man. It was an amazing introduction to voice acting for me, and it only led me to being more and more interested in what they, being voice actors, had to offer.
The next voice actor that inspired me heavily was Matthew Charles Labyorteaux, also known as Matthew Charles, for his work as Jaden Yuki in the 4Kids Dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx. Hearing his voice as Jaden growing up had me in a chokehold, because every single episode I was rooting for Jaden Yuki. I collected cards that the character would use, owned the toys associated with the character, and read the manga, which deviated from the anime’s story but kept the English localized names. I wanted to be just like Jaden Yuki, and his voice was a gateway to that. Matthew’s portrayal of his upbeat personality, with this neighborhood hero persona was felt on full blast. There’s quite a few people who didn’t like what 4Kids have done with Jaden Yuki, but I couldn’t disagree more. I loved Matthew Charles’s portrayal and tried to replicate it growing up when I was playing with my friends. Matthew Charles also brings the weight of the character, especially in the 3rd season of the show. His voice portrayal of his fight against Yubel (played by Cassandra Lee Morris) was emotional and powerful in all the right ways. Cassandra Lee Morris is also popularly known as ,the cat mascot, Morgana in the hit series, Persona 5. Their portrayal felt real to me growing up, and I loved their work!
Finally, I wanted to cover someone who came from the Indie realm before now being featured in the popular gacha game, Honkai Star Rail: Joshua Waters. Joshua has been known for their work as: Phainon (Honkai Star Rail), Eddie Dear (Welcome Home), Shuto Sendou (Blue Lock), and Stone (Ramshackle). Their range is absolutely amazing, and the way they truly digs their teeth into the roll is just fascinating. When I was younger, I wanted to create a fan project (which unfortunately didn’t pilot) and Joshua Water’s was one of the individuals who provided an audition! That stuck with me, for some reason, and gave me the motivation to continue working on projects, because you never know who might be involved!
These are just a few of the many people involved in voice acting who have continuously inspire me to continue pursuing this craft.
Thanks for reading and Happy Voicing!
