Thoughts & Advice!

Image
Hey there!   In this post, I wanted to talk about the several thoughts and advice that I have gathered from my short time in Voice Over. You are able to get so much from so many people if you’re just willing to take the chance and listen to what they have to say.   To begin, I wanted to reference Buford Taylor’s quote on his about tab on the website Casting Call Club: “Casting Call Club is where you practice. It is a safe place to hone your skills and level yourself up. I've always dreamed that CCC becomes the place that people point to when they are asked how they got started. Some of the success stories coming out of CCC are amazing. We've had people go from 0 to 100,000 YouTube subscribers in a year. We've had people land roles in games like Mass Effect and Nier. But the best feeling isn't the big successes, it's the first.” This website is used by a plethora of voice actors daily as a starting casting website. I wanted to focus on th...

Never Enough Practice!

Hey There!   I wanted to take this time to talk about my thoughts on my most recent video, my reading of “To Be or Not to Be” from Hamlet! I wanted to practice another semi-cold read with another classical piece of work. Just like my personal portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Tell Tale Heart”, I wanted to use a piece of media that uses classical English to challenge myself.   Just in case you didn’t know, “To Be or Not to Be” is from the classical play Hamlet, written by playwright William Shakespeare. I’m sure most English classes forced their middle or high school students to read or listen to someone portray the piece, but I think most people are at least familiar with the phrase ‘to be or not to be’.   To begin, I wanted to first talk about how challenging this monologue is. It comes from an emotional place where Hamlet is considering suicide over the events that happened in his life with his father and his new stepfather King Claudius. He’s at a dark...

My introduction to acting!

Image
Hey there!   I wanted to talk about my journey with acting before and during my start of voice over. One of the biggest things about voice acting is the presence of acting. Acting skills can only help you more and more through your voice over / voice acting journey.   To begin, I was acting for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, I would recreate scenes with my dad, who has an acting background. We would do these scenes for fun, but I learned a lot about performance from it. One distinct memory was when we were recreating Uncle Ben’s death from the movie “Spider-Man” (directed by Sam Raimi). We’ve done the scene countless times, but for some reason, I cried seeing my dad lie on the floor of our small apartment. When he sat up, ready to ‘parent the situation’, he asked me what was wrong. I responded with many sniffles and tears that “I’m not ready to be Spider-Man.” That memory continues to sit with me when I revisit my beginnings w...

My Inspirations!

Hey there!   I wanted to talk about some of my many inspirations that I have when pursuing my journey with voice acting / voice over! I hope you enjoy the read!   To begin, I want to revisit my childhood by remembering the 2000 PS1 game “Spider-Man”. In this game, Peter Parker, also known as the Amazing Spider-Man, is at a science expo where a fake Spider-Man steals a device, and the real Spider-Man is tasked to clear his name as well as fight some familiar foes. During the later stages of the game, you encounter the infamous and deadly foe named Carnage, a crazed alien symbiote with murderous intent. In the game, his voice was portrayed by Dee Bradley Baker. His portrayal had the alien symbiote with this manic high-pitched voice, where each word is enunciated and drawn out to really “revel” in the madness of Carnage’s sanity. As a kid, I was hooked. I felt terrified by the chipper, almost hyena-esque, laughter that Dee Bradley Baker was able t...

My introduction to voice acting auditions!

Image
Hey there!   I wanted to talk about my journey with one of the biggest parts of voice acting, Auditions. For people that might not be as accustomed to the concept, Auditioning is one of the biggest aspects of voice acting because that effort is about ‘getting your foot in the door’. When I was just starting out, I would focus heavily on the projects that I wanted to be a part of, but I would have I didn’t know where to start. The first website I found voice acting auditions on a website called BehindTheVoiceActor. BehindTheVoiceActor was a website where voice acting enthusiasts could present projects (usually fandubs or the act of redubbing a piece of media with a new cast, or comic dubs, the acting of providing more life to a comic book/manga) for people interested in the franchise to ‘throw their hat in the ring’ and audition. I remember auditioning for this one project where they were looking for a voice for the insanely recognizable, Sonic the Hedgehog. I wasn’t init...

My Microphone!

Hey there!   I wanted to bring up a topic that many voice actors question when starting out: what should I buy? What equipment should I use to get into voice acting? Is there a specific starter set that you should get? Questions like these have interested me during my entire time as a voice actor. I wanted to use the best equipment, I wanted to use the best Digital Audio Workstation (also known as DAW), I wanted to know what to use to get my foot into the door. Tricky thing is, there isn’t one specific set of equipment to use. You can use practically anything when you’re starting out! As long as you’re getting your voice out there, you’re making progress. So, I want to share how my personal journey was and still is for finding my equipment.   Contrary to what may have been popular at the time, I first started voice acting on a USB Headset. You know the ones that are usually associated with gaming or for skype? I started off on a c...
